In elementary (K-5th grade), we learned that it’s important to respect authority. Romans 13:1 says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” It can be difficult to get along with the authorities in our life. Maybe it’s a teacher who doesn’t seem to be fair, a police officer that writes the speeding ticket, or even a boss that you can’t seem to see eye to eye on anything. But, God has placed those people in their position for a reason. They have been given a great responsibility, and we can’t control what they do with it. But, we can control how we treat them. Romans 13 also says that if we respect them, things will turn out right. That authority might not change, but God will be well pleased, and that’s better than the approval of men.
